Glacier in October Loses Its Beds Before Its Road

By the second weekend of October, the west side of Glacier National Park has almost nowhere left to rent a room. Apgar Village Lodge & Cabins and Belton Chalet both end their 2026 seasons on October 11. Lake McDonald Lodge closed even earlier, on September 28. The park road stays open longer than the lodges do. The National Park Service says the alpine section of Going-to-the-Sun Road typically stays open until the third Monday in October. This year that's October 19, unless winter weather closes it first.

That gap shapes the rest of the season. In late October the park has fewer services than at any point since spring. It also costs less to enter, and you don't need a reservation to drive in. For anyone who lives within an hour of the West Entrance, October is a day-trip month. The useful questions are which doors are still open, which roads are passable, and what the gate costs that week.

The Order the Doors Close

Glacier's seasonal shutdown has been rolling since mid-September, and it continues into December. These are the published 2026 dates, in order:

  1. September 16. Swiftcurrent Motor Inn & Cabins in Many Glacier ends its season.
  2. September 21. Many Glacier Hotel closes.
  3. September 26. Northern Lights Saloon in Polebridge serves its last day of the season.
  4. September 28. Lake McDonald Lodge closes, and Logan Pass Visitor Center closes until June 26.
  5. September 30. Apgar Campground switches to its primitive fall and winter setup.
  6. October 5. St. Mary Visitor Center closes until May 21.
  7. October 11. Apgar Village Lodge & Cabins and Belton Chalet end their seasons. Apgar Visitor Center's last day of daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. hours.
  8. October 12 through 25. Apgar Visitor Center is open weekends only, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  9. October 19. The usual end of the alpine road season under the Park Service's third-Monday rule. This is a typical date, not an announced closure.
  10. October 26 through December 18. Apgar Visitor Center is closed.

Overnight stays drop off first, Swiftcurrent in mid-September and the last west-side lodges on October 11. Visitor centers thin out next, from daily hours to weekends to closed. The alpine road is one of the last things to go, and only weather can close it ahead of schedule.

The Road Runs on Weather

The October 19 date is a habit, not a promise. On September 14, Hungry Horse News reported that the park had closed Going-to-the-Sun Road from Avalanche Creek to Jackson Glacier Overlook, with several inches of snow on the pass. The paper added:

"The road will reopen when conditions improve. It typically closes for the season in mid-October in the higher elevations. September snow is very common in Glacier."

The same thing happened a week earlier. A closure on September 6 ahead of forecast rain was lifted by 2 p.m. on September 9, according to the Park Service. Weather has closed and reopened the alpine section more than once this fall, and it can do so again before October 19. The park's static Current Conditions page still shows a summer alert, so it isn't a reliable guide to the road on any given morning. For that, the Park Service points to its live road-status map, or you can text GNPROADS to 333111 for alerts.

When the road is open, Logan Pass is easier to reach than it was in summer. The 2026 shuttle and the three-hour parking limit at Logan Pass ended after September 7. Parking is now first-come, first-served with no time limit until the alpine road closes. No vehicle reservations were required anywhere in the park in 2026. In 2025, the west-side Going-to-the-Sun corridor needed a reservation from June 13 through September 28.

After the alpine section closes for the season, the west-side vehicle gate sits just past Lake McDonald Lodge. According to the Park Service, the road beyond the gate remains open to hikers and skiers. That guidance comes from a page last updated in 2024, so check how it applies this year. The Park Service has also listed culvert work on North Lake McDonald Road as anticipated for fall 2026, without specific dates.

The Gate Gets Cheaper Before the Snow Sets In

Entry gets cheaper as services wind down, on a schedule anyone can plan around:

  • Standard private-vehicle entry is $35.
  • October 27 is a fee-free day for U.S. citizens and residents. It marks Theodore Roosevelt's birthday.
  • November 1 starts the winter rate. A private vehicle drops to $25, and per-person entry drops from $20 to $15, through April 30.

Two details matter if you're bringing guests from abroad. Non-U.S. residents age 16 and older pay an extra $100 at Glacier unless a qualifying annual pass covers them. They also still owe regular and nonresident fees on the October 27 fee-free day. The 2026 America the Beautiful annual pass costs $80 for U.S. residents and $250 for nonresidents.

Up the North Fork, Construction Changes the Map

Weather decides the Sun Road. In the North Fork, a construction schedule decides access, and it took effect yesterday. Starting October 4, the Park Service planned to close Inside North Fork Road to all traffic heading from the Polebridge Ranger Station toward Logging Creek. Crews are installing a water main and water tank as part of a project replacing the ranger station area's water supply, distribution system and tank. Trenching in front of the ranger station is also expected this month.

Bowman Lake and Kintla Lake remain reachable. The Park Service says public access to both is unaffected by the construction. It expects the significant work to finish in November, with no heavy construction over the winter and any remaining road or site restoration done by summer 2027. For an October drive up the North Fork, the change affects one branch of the road and leaves the two lakes open.

Polebridge itself is still open, though some businesses have closed. Northern Lights Saloon closed for the season on September 26. Polebridge Mercantile says it is open for the 2026 season and lists fall hours of 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, with no closing date given. The Mercantile sits outside the park, and you can reach it year-round from Columbia Falls on MT 486 without a park pass or reservation.

Why the West Side Carries Late October

The east side of the park has fewer options this fall than the west. Two Medicine Road is closed at its intersection with MT-49 for a rehabilitation project that resumed in mid- to late September 2026. That work is scheduled to finish in late 2027 and could run into 2028. Two Medicine Campground is closed for all of 2026. St. Mary Visitor Center closed for the season on October 5. St. Mary Campground expects partial closures from fall 2026 through spring 2027 while its water system is replaced. In Many Glacier, the 2025 Swiftcurrent-area road and water work is finished and left 339 parking spaces, 171 more than before. The hotel and motor inn there are closed for the season, though.

That leaves the Apgar end of Lake McDonald as the part of the park with services into late October. Apgar Visitor Center stays open on weekends through October 25. Apgar Campground stays open year-round. From September 30 through April 18 it runs in primitive mode, with vault toilets in place of comfort stations and no potable water or dump station. One summer change carries forward. In 2026, Sun Tours and Red Bus departures that used to leave from Apgar Visitor Center moved to the Quarter Circle Parking Lot. Lodge and restaurant closures don't affect the road to Lake McDonald or to Bowman Lake. Both stay drivable after the last room on the west side closes on October 11.

Glacier's quieter season runs on the same seasonal calendar that shapes life on land just outside the park, from road access to the timing of winter work.
